All hail Britannia! Lelouch Lamperouge’s birthday was extra special this year with a livestream detailing what’s more to come from the acclaimed franchise, including the new Code Geass: Z of the Recapture (Dakkan no Zetto) series.
The 85-minute event streamed on YouTube and Periscope confirmed the series is in the works with none other Sunrise once again in charge of animation.
No specific story details yet, but Z of the Recapture will follow the events of the Lelouch of the Resurrection movie, which presented an alternate universe.

Takahiro Kimura reprises his role as character designer, suggesting the characters will adhere to their original CLAMP look.
However, it’s a different case with the Knightmare mecha: Astrays is in charge of mechanical design for Z of the Recapture. Yet not much is known except that they had the same role for the Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru anime this year.
The directing and scripting department have big changes, with Yoshimitsu Ohashi and Noboru Kimura leading them, respectively.
Ohashi was part of Akito the Exiled and Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, but only as key animator and episode director. On the other hand, Z of the Recapture is Kimura’s first Code Geass project.

As for the release date, fans have to wait and see. I expect it to arrive in 2022, but a late 2021 release isn’t entirely out of the question.
After all, the livestream confirmed the Spring 2021 launch of mobile game Code Geass: Genesic Re;CODE, which can build hype for Z of the Recapture with in-game easter eggs and events.
Code Geass has been around since 2006 and the thrilling, much-lauded original story is done and dusted. However, with the 10-year project already set in motion in 2019 with Lelouch of the Ressurection, there’s clearly no end in sight just yet for the franchise as a whole.
