Marvel has been at it since the dawn of time. With more than a handful of source material to be inspired from, they’re looking to lay the foundations for their franchise’s future. This time, they’re betting on Iman Vellani’s portrayal of Kamala Khan in her first footage for the Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel.
The sneak peek isn’t really to showcase her “Embiggen” powers, but it does manifest what happens in Khan’s daily routine alongside a few testimonials about the character and her impact on the franchise since being created back in 2013.
According to showrunner and executive producer, Bisha K. Ali, Khan is “a new kind of superhero, but at the core of all of it, her story is so universal.”
“I never thought a young teenager of color — specifically a Pakistani — in a comic book. Are you kidding,” she add. And no, Marvel definitely isn’t kidding. It’s just really that epic.
“When Ms. Marvel first came out, we had such an incredible reaction,” Kamala co-creator, Sana Amanat, says. Amanat also serves as an executive producer on Ms. Marvel.
“It was so incredibly popular because everybody could see themselves in her,” supervising producer, Jenna Berger, stated.
The official Marvel Entertainment YouTube account dropped the video last 10th of December––one of the biggest dates from Marvel during the quarantine period as they released announcements, trailers, and first looks all at the same date. From Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, to What If…?, within just a few hours sneak peeks for these shows were premiered and it got Marvel fans on the edge of their seats. You know, just an old Marvel habit, I assume.
Reportedly, Ms. Marvel is set to premiere on Disney+ in the latter parts of 2021. However, Kamala Khan will actually make her on-screen debut in Captain Marvel 2. The sequel will be directed by Nia DaCosta with Brie Larson, of course, as Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel herself alongside Teynoah Parris as a grown-up version of Monica Rambeau. The sequel is set to premiere on the 11th of November, 2022.
