'Great Pretender' Season 3: Renewal, Release Date, and Everything You Need to Know

At first, Great Pretender seems like it doesn’t amount to much. If given the chance, however, I’m sure you’ll be turning your head to the anime 180 degrees. The anime series is buried under the wide catalog of Netflix’s libraries––but once you find it, there really is no turning back from it. With that, fans have already been waiting for the release date of the third season.

What is Great Pretender all about?

First of all, Great Pretender is a Netflix Original anime series produced by Wit Studio––the same studio responsible for one of your favorite Netflix animes, Attack on Titan. The first season of Great Pretender premiered in June of 2020 and it now boasts of two seasons.

The anime is a Japanese crime comedy series but when you look at the genre longer, it makes you ask just how serious this anime is. That, in itself, is an understatement because the anime gives you something to look forward to every episode while keeping up with the excitement and tension throughout––just mix in a little bit of comedy, for good measure. Or are animes just naturally funny?

The story of the anime revolves around the story of Makoto Edamura who pretends to be Japan’s biggest criminal. His confidence, however, leads him to face a couple of unexpected situations. On one fine day, Edamura tries to deceive Laurent Thierry, one of the finest frauds in the world, and eventually gets himself into some big trouble.

Is Great Pretender Renewed for Season 3?

Unfortunately, there’s no bit of information announced by either Netflix or Wit Studio just yet. Kaburagi, the director of Great Pretender, on the other, did say this about the third season of the anime series:

“If you want to see a sequel, do be sure to tell your friends and acquaintances about it,” he said. “So that you can increase the viewer count on Netflix!”

Okay, so there are two ways to go about what Kaburagi just said. First of all, the chance of a third season looks more and more likely. The possibility is there, the director approves of it, and they’re asking you to invite your friends and acquaintances to watch because of the viewership count. Secondly, there’s a real chance that the third season would be appearing on Netflix and no place else. Kaburagi’s confidence with the streaming giant looks adamant, and so should yours.

Kaburagi has always talked positively of the series, especially the new season. He also said that Wit Studio has a “financial incentive” to create another season of the Japanese comedy series. Either way, it’s looking better and better for the fans!

When is the Great Pretender Season 3 release date?

Despite the lack of renewal and news from both Netflix and Wit Studio, rumors are still spreading about the release date of the third season of Great Pretender. The case might be true about the absence of news, but the series is rumored to return around Autumn of 2021.

Looking at both seasons 1 and 2, it’s safe to assume that the third season would be following the same production process––meaning the same release schedule, or at least close to it. Normally, the production process takes a year or so.
