One of the biggest icons in the comedy scene has wished for his Netflix show to be removed by the streaming giant. Looks like people won’t be able to see the genius behind Dave Chappelle’s Chappelle’s Show.
Though the show was a definite work of art ever since it was created alongside ViacomCBS, the relationship behind it wasn’t as perfect as imagined. Chappelle took it to Instagram to share a video he titled “Unforgiven,” where he featured footage from his recent stand-up gig. In the stand-up, he claimed that ViacomCBS never paid him after leaving the platform.
“They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract,” Chappelle said in the video.
“But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal ‘cause I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either. That’s why I like working for Netflix. I like working for Netflix because when all those bad things happened to me, that company didn’t even exist. And when I found out they were streaming ‘Chappelle’s Show,’ I was furious. How could they not– how could they not know? So you know what I did? I called them and I told them that this makes me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would take it off their platform just so I could feel better.”
Netflix didn’t have to comment on the matter, they already did what they thought was best for both the platform and one of the biggest comedians in the world. In fact, Chappelle has made a handful of stand-ups and specials with the platform––calling Netflix his comedy home.
Unfortunately, the removal of the show comes three weeks after the show actually started streaming on the platform.
