No, Netflix is not Thanos, but they do have something even better––Void, a sci-fi thriller. Just like any new thriller, Void, which is still in its early development stage, is without a director just yet. However, the story is a little crazier than what you’d expect from a sci-fi thriller. The project will be following a group of space crew members who begin to reappear dead while they make their efforts to escape from a distant moon where memories are erased by some sort of magnetic force. The hardest obstacle of the mission, however, is that it happens every eight hours.
According to Deadline‘s Anthony D’Alessandro, the sci-fi murder mystery has components from other projects like Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, and Christopher Nolan’s Memento. Now that’s a crazy lineup of films. If it were to be somewhere along the lines of the creativity of Knives Out, the astronaut-centered Sunshine, and directing genius from Nolan’s Memento, I think we have ourselves Netflix’s future hit right here. Either way, we can’t jump the gun just yet as it is still in early development.
Alongside Chris Borelli, the notable people who will be working on this project are Charles D. King and Poppy Hanks from MACRO who are set to produce while MACRO’s Director of Development Greta Fuentes is putting on her executive producing hat. The screenplay, on the other hand, went out as a spec and was available for any media folk. At the end of the day, MACRO was given the opportunity to bring the project to life.
Gladly, that team has more than enough talent to bring life to the thriller. Borrelli, for example, is one of the best writers in the business. Whether it be action, thriller, horror, or sci-fi, this man can, and will, give you the best stories. His resume boasts the likes of exorcism thriller The Vatican Tapes and Eloise. Take that for a couple of projects, eh? Nowadays, he’s been working on Atomic Monster and New Line’s Roswell alongside Lights Out 2 and New Line. Recently as well, Borrelli and director Simon Crane have sold an untitled action thriller to Universal produced by Mandeville.
Looks like Borrelli has his hands full and we should be grateful he’s working on a sci-fi thrill for the streaming giant.
MACRO isn’t one to be dismissed, though, as they, too, have some of their greatest contributions to the industry. Take, for example, their four-time Oscar-nominated Mudbound and Oscar-winning Fences. Alongside these projects, they’re responsible for Sorry To Bother You, Just Mercy, and the upcoming Warner Bros. release in Judas and The Black Messiah.
That’s a powerhouse of a list, and the latter-most of the list is expected to become just as good. Judas and The Black Messiah tells the story of how the leader of the Chicago Black Panther, Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), was betrayed by FBI informant William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield). As it stands, the film has already received two Golden Globe nominations: one for Daniel Kaluuya as Best Supporting Actor and the other for Best Original Song in “Fight for You.” To add to that, Kaluuya was also nominated for Screen Actors Guild’s supporting actor as well as the film being named to one of the National Board of Review’s top 10 films and the American Film Institute’s Best Film of the Year.
Though there’s hardly anyone in front of the camera for Void, there sure is a lot of firepower behind it.
