Nothing screams festivities more than Adrien Brody and a genetic abomination going at it for which he’s fully responsible of. If you’re one to watch these types of films during the jolly holidays, then you better make it fast––Splice will be leaving Netflix on the 31st of December.
Splice is one of the weirdest 2009 sci-fi horror flicks that’s found its way on the streaming giant in the earlier parts of the pandemic-stricken year. Directed by Vincenzo Natali, responsible for 1997’s Cube, explains a lot of things––especially the weird ones.

The film revolves around two researchers named Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley). Collectively, they have pretty peculiar job orders including DNA experimentation and finding the most unique proteins from animals so they can use them for drug production. All these go into their efforts in creating the very first human-animal crossbreed. However, their higher-ups are questioning the ethics behind the project where man is yet to comprehend this type of scientific discovery.
I’m guessing that’s the “science” part of the sci-fi. The fictional part, however, comes as creepily as ever with both researchers creating Dren (Delphine Chanéac), a gene-filled mammal of some sort that becomes an adult. While it grows, both researchers are infatuated with the developments.
Sometimes you just don’t know where the line between science and fiction is––maybe that’s why there’s a specific genre for it. Splice is a great example of how weird actually works for the genre. Abominations and all that, it did showcase what the science-fiction genre is all about––breaking the limits of your imagination. If that’s your type of jam, make sure to watch the film before it goes away!
