Hear ye, hear ye! Netflix has a brand new top-ranked movie within its libraries, and yes, you guessed it––it’s yet another holiday-themed one!
The Impossible, starring Naomi Watts, has just dethroned Operation Christmas Drop as the streaming giant’s top flick on its list of most-watched movies. The best thing about this is that the movie premiered way back in 2012 and has ranked ahead of the likes of Holidate and Mile 22.
The Impossible revolves around the story of an English family, with their three children, who are on a vacation in Khao Lak, Thailand for the holidays. However, December 2004 wasn’t really the perfect time for the holidays in Thailand––little do they know that a massive tsunami will be hitting the village they’re resided in.
As far as they knew, Maria (Naomi Watts) and her family arrived safely during Christmas Eve. 48 hours later, tragedy struck their holidays. As a family, they have to recover from injuries and make an effort to avoid another––the chances to survive seem, well, impossible.
Alongside Watts, the movie also stars Ewan McGregor as Henry, a young future Spider-Man in Tom Holland as Lucas, Samuel Joslin as Thomas, Oaklee Pendergast as Simon, Marta Etura as Simone, Sönke Möhring as Karl, Geraldine Chaplin, and Johan Sunderberg as Daniel.
Directed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Lord of the Rings‘ J. A. Bayona, the team behind the movie proves to be as star-studded as the cast. María Belón wrote the story while Sergio G. Sánches spearheaded the screenplay. As for executive producers, The Lord of the Rings‘ Belén Atienza, Pan’s Labyrinth‘s Álvaro Augustin, Way Down‘s Ghislain Barrois, and 28 Weeks Later‘s Enrique López Lavigne will serve the part for the movie.
Either way, what this shows is the massive firepower of holiday movies not just for the platform, but totally in general. Netflix didn’t do wrong in really pushing for a November Christmas lineup––like most years, really.
