Molly Ostertag’s Novel ‘The Witch Boy’ to Become a Netflix Animated Musical

This week, Netflix has been on the receiving part of some of the biggest animated adaptations. Behind the likes of Tomb Raider and Skull Island, the streaming giant has something in store for major sci-fi lovers. Molly Knox Ostertag’s 2017 novel, The Witch Boy, will be having its own animated musical for the streamer. Reportedly, the graphic novel will be brought to life by Oscar-nominated short Adam and Dog‘s Mikyu Lee alongside screenwriter Maria Melnik. As for the musical part of the adaptation, leave it to Haim.

The Witch Boy has two sequels in The Hidden Witch and The Midwinter Witch but proves to be the best one out of the three. The story is as beautiful as ever––not one you’d expect from the fiction genre. According to the publisher, the novel is about:

In thirteen-year-old Aster’s family, all the girls are raised to be witches, while boys grow up to be shapeshifters. Anyone who dares cross those lines is exiled. Unfortunately for Aster, he still hasn’t shifted, and he’s still fascinated by witchery, no matter how forbidden it might be. When a mysterious danger threatens the other boys, Aster knows he can help—as a witch. It will take the encouragement of a new friend, the non-magical and non-conforming Charlie, to convince Aster to try practicing his skills. And it will require even more courage to save his family, and to be truly himself.

The streaming giant has released a piece of the concept art (seen above) that sure promises to be one of the better-animated styles we’ve seen in a long while. The depth, the colors, the concept––all we can do is hope this all translates to the true potential of the adaptation. As for the release date and the cast, no news has been released regarding them. Might I advise you to read the book while we all impatiently wait for this Netflix bonanza?
