Netflix’s ‘The Life Ahead’ Marks the Legendary Sophia Loren’s Return to the Screen

One everyone would expect to be walking the hall of fame, Sophia Loren, is bound to make her return to the screen with The Life Ahead to be distributed by Netflix. The film is a drama revolving around the story between a retired sex worker and an unlikely friendship with a 12-year-old boy from Senegal.

In the film, Loren will be playing Madame Rosa––the main character of the movie. She encounters a handful of obstacles after she makes an effort to allow Momo (played by Ibrahima Gueye) to live under her roof which also serves as a shelter for other sex workers’ children.

Based on Romain Gary’s critically-acclaimed novel, The Life Before Us, the new Netflix film will be flaunting its story about a strong woman and her relationship with a boy who’s struggling to walk on two feet in his new country.

“[Madame Rosa’s character] reminded me of my mother,” says Loren. One of the reasons why she wanted to return from retirement was to take on this specific role––not for her career but to commemorate her late mother, Romilda Villani.

That’s why I made the film. She reminded me a lot about my mother. My mother was absolutely like that. Inside she was very fragile, but she looked strong,” Loren told CBS.

It was time for me to start again at my age which I’m not going to tell you but maybe you know it already but it’s fun, it’s fun, it’s wonderful,” Loren said.

Everybody ages. I mean — me, too! I’m not a saint. Me too. What can I do? Should I be afraid? Why? It’s wonderful. And I look wonderful for my age, anyway,” Loren added.

The Life Ahead will be dropping on Netflix on the 13th of November, 2020.
