Sandra Oh will be seen on Netflix. The Chair, a new comedy starring the Golden Globe winner, follows Ji-Yoon Kim (Oh) as she becomes the first woman of color to be named chair of the English Department at Pembroke University.

All About Sanda Oh’s New Series

The Chair’s plot is largely unknown, but it has been revealed that Ji-Yoon (Oh) is the first female Chair of the English department at Pembroke University, and she is expected to succeed. Professor Joan Hambling (Taylor), a funny, straight-talking English professor in the department, is a personal friend and confidante of hers. While this gives away very little, we can be sure that the series will highlight Ji-struggles Yoon’s as the first Asian woman to hold such a high position in that sector, as well as deliver plenty of comic moments along the way. When she walks into the room and attempts to settle in, humorous elements such as a seemingly gifted name tag decorated with some colorful language and a wobbly chair that can’t seem to contain the new tenant take over.

“Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of color at the university,” the Netflix synopsis teases.

This is only a taste of what’s to come in the series, which also covers Dr. Kim’s unique mix of problems as the department’s first female chair and one of the university’s few staff members of color. Amanda Peet executive produces and writes the six half-hour episodes of the season.

Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Nana Mensah, Bob Balaban, David Morse, and Everly Carganilla star in the series. The cast also includes Ji Yong Lee, Mallor Low, Marcia Debonis, Ron Crawford, Ella Rubin, and Bob Stephenson.

The Chair will premiere on Netflix on Friday, August 20. Are you excited for The Chair to be released on Netflix? Let us know in the comments, and bookmark this page for updates as they become available.
