Anthony Mackie on “Old Man Cap”, ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,’ and Role of Captain America?

At the end of Avengers: Endgame (assuming that you’re one of those who contributed money to the biggest hit of theatric history), we saw Captain America weak on his knees as his age finally catches up with him. The old man, however, wasn’t supposed to be Chris Evans in prosthetics, says Anthony Mackie in an interview with SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show.

They actually wanted to cast an old dude to play Chris Evans,” Mackie said. “So they brought in like three actors. They’re like…this isn’t how Chris will look when he’s old. He’s like George Clooney — he’s going to be 95 and still like handsome, you know? So they brought in a makeup team and made him into an old man. And how good of an actor Chris is, it actually worked. He pulled it off with his voice and everything. He did a great job.

Yup, accurate depiction. A 95-year-old George Clooney does actually look gorgeous if you think about it. Carry on, Mackie.

Alongside the scene, however, were rumors that Old Man Cap (if it hasn’t been trademarked for use yet) wasn’t supposed to be sitting down because apparently, it would take more visual and other special effects. Mackie, on the other hand, has confirmed that these rumors are false.

It was agreed upon from jump that he would be sitting on a bench,” Mackie said. “Being an old man, he got to take his rest when he came.

Mackie has been around the world of sci-fi frequently nowadays. From projects like Outside the Wire and Disney+’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, it was inevitable for the MCU star to talk about his upcoming reprising of Falcon. Together with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), the two are set off for an adventure of a lifetime following the aging of their mutual best friend, Steve Rogers. The series is likely to show who will be carrying the shield of Cap.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield,” Mackie tells Cagle. But at no point in time did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America. So the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back.

Whoops. Guess we all jumped the gun there…or did we? Either way, just lookout for the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on the 19th of March, 2021, on Disney+.
