Looks like the newest hero from The CW will be making her debut this weekend, yeah? Javicia Leslie is taking on the mantle of the new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder. After the departure of Ruby Rose as the original titular role, Leslie was in need to step up. However, questions still arise as to why production didn’t just recast Rose and focused on the story of Kate Kane?

In an interview, showrunner Caroline Dries told Entertainment Weekly that she’s not totally against the idea of having a different actress play the titular role after Rose’s departure. For her, it didn’t sit right for Rose to reprise the role with no plans ahead––no in-story explanations for viewers and fans of the show.

To make things simpler, she just said that it felt “weird and awkward.”

It didn’t feel like the right move for me because honestly, it just felt weird and awkward, and unearned. I’m not opposed to recasting the character of Kate Kane at all. But doing a swap out without any story motivation behind it felt really weird to me. To me, it was asking too much of the audience,” she explained.

From a production standpoint, it just has to make more than enough creative sense within the story for why Batwoman doesn’t look like Rose anymore. The CW always loves the concept of time-warping and universe-hopping that a future version of Kate might just work. I mean, this is a comic book show that many fans deem just as epic as its patriarchic twin. Maybe there are other ways to cover it.

Either way, Batwoman Season 2 will premiere on Sunday, 17th of January, 2021, on The CW.
