Legendary blockbuster film director Christopher Nolan has revealed that he is open to the idea of his films being adapted into video games.
‘It’s definitely something I’m interested in,” he said. “It’s an amazing world.’
The critically acclaimed director, who writes and produces the majority of his films, became a household name after his Dark Knight trilogy set the superhero bar staggeringly high, and has since gone from strength to strength with smash hits films including Inception, Dunkirk and Interstellar.
Praised for his creative storytelling and non-linear arrangement, which create a cerebral experience not accustomed to big-budget blockbusters, the filmmaker has garnered more than 30 Oscar nominations and ten wins.
The video game industry has grown larger than the film and music industry combined in recent years and now has the finance and creative scope to accommodate Nolan’s brand of ambitious storytelling. But how exactly would it work?
‘You don’t want to just be doing a licensed game,’ Nolan has said recently. ‘You don’t want to just be tying into something and using the brand established by the film. Same way actually you don’t want to, when you do a film adaptation from a video game, you don’t want it to just draft off the brand. You want it to be something great.’
It’s clear that Nolan understands the difficulties in converting films to video games and vice versa – trying to create something original and new whilst at the same time appealing to the existing fan base. With gamers so passionate about the titles they love this is a tricky job. But if anyone is up for the job, Nolan is the person.
