The fifth season of Outlander exhausted itself of greatness when the Starz time-hopping and history-altering series premiered last spring. After what was a pretty turbulent finale that ended with Jamie and Claire enjoying their deserved hiatus alone together after problematic scenes at their Fraser’s Ridge homestead, production on the show has already given the green light for an upcoming sixth season. However, that was delayed because of the pandemic. Darn it, COVID, why must you?!
Don’t fret, Outlander fans, thanks to Starz and Sony Pictures Television, your wait has been given justice. Feel free to scream on top of your lungs as the delays are now finally gone and over with as the network officially reveals that the production for the sixth season of the series has begun. To commemorate such a feat of happiness, Starz has shared a first-look/behind-the-scenes glimpse from the Season 6 set located in Scotland.
In the photo, you can see Jamie and Claire alone together again. Ah, it feels like the world is, again, at balance––just like how we left off in the fifth season finale.
Showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts was feeling dangerous last summer––teasing that the new season was bringing a whole new level of harsh reality to the residents of Fraser’s Bridge as they navigate through new personal traumas alongside the coming war. If you think Claire and Jamie are safe from this madness, stop that. After experiencing and enduring their personal evils at different times, they are, unfortunately, not spared from the set of obstacles once the sixth season begins.
“You suffer. And it happens again,” said Roberts. “But there will be joys, there will be drama, suffering, tears.”
That line looks so sadistic, but it is the reality.
However, there’s much more to understand than just Catriona Balfe (Claire) and Sam Heughan (Jamie) on a carriage. While Heughan was also excited for the reunion of the cast (through a tweet seen below), Starz was also up on their feet as they teased the beginning of filming alongside a behind-the-scenes glance on the costumes, set designs, and locations we’ll be seeing throughout the sixth season.

As per usual, finales of this series receive a ton of woeful gasps and a couple of claps here and there. The fifth season finale is no different as Marsal (Lauren Lyle) finds her own satisfying way to let Lionel Brown know once and for all. Claire, on the other hand, went to a tamer environment during the modern-period 20th-Century fantasy to get away from the experiences.
As Fraser’s Ridge is finally getting back up on its feet, the whistles of war are getting louder and louder––and we all know that there’s an unlimited amount of trauma for Season 6, so strap on your best seatbelts and prepare for a ride of a lifetime.
“For the Frasers and their immediate family, ‘home’ is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives,” Starz teased as part of this week’s production reveal.
“If Season 4 asked ‘What is home?’ and Season 5 asked, ‘What are you willing to do to protect your home?’ then Season 6 explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you’ve created: when you become an outsider, or an ‘outlander,’ so to speak, marginalized and rejected in your own home,” they added.
A premiere date is yet to be disclosed to the public but this is a chance for newcomers and future fans to watch what they’ve missed on Outlander. All five seasons of the series are available to stream on Starz!
