Ahead of The Crown’s Season 5 Release, Here’s Everything You Need to Know

The British drama series, The Crown shows no sign of halting since it hit the screen five years ago in November 2016.

On Sep 25 2021, The Crown @TheCrownNetflix dropped a tweet announcing the release date of season 5 for November 2022. Imelda Staunton featured in a brief video message expressing her delight to be the new series’ Queen Elizabeth, taking over from the past royal matriarch’s played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.

When Was The Show Renewed for a Fifth Season?

Netflix renewed The Crown for a fifth and final season in January 2020, despite initially signing for six seasons. But in June 2020, Netflix gave the show’s sixth instalment the green light.

When Did Season 5 Filming Begin?

The show’s production kicked off in July 2021, following all the COVID-19 guidelines, however, after an increasing number of crew members tested positive for the virus, filming was suspended in December 2021.

Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Feature in Season 5?

Peter Morgan, the show’s creator, confirmed that the storyline of Harry and Meghan will not debut in this season nor the next one.

He stated in an interview with Hollywood Reporter in August 2020 that he wanted to maintain the show’s events to at least the past two decades to approach the subject creatively. So modern-day royal scandals including Prince Andrew’s 2019 step down will not be featured.

Who Do We Expect to See in Season 5?

Taking over from Emma Corrin, Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana, the Princess of Wales. Dominic West is set to play Prince Charles in the last two seasons while his son, Senan West, takes on the part of Prince William.

We’ll also see new characters joining the cast including, Jonny Lee Miller playing John Major, the British Prime Minister from 1990-1997. Lesley Manville plays Princess Margaret, while Jonathan Pryce plays the late Prince Philip.

Lastly, Khalid Abdalla will star as the late Princess Diana’s boyfriend while Salim Daw will play his billionaire father, Mohamed Al-Fayed.
