‘Wish Dragon’: The Sony and Netflix Animation’s Release Date, Plot, and Voice Cast Details

Looks like Netflix is banking on a modern-day Aladdin, eh? Well, the streaming giant opens itself to a whole new dimension of wish-granting with Wish Dragon. No Genie or flying carpets, just a simple boy named Din (Jimmy Wong) who’s granted three wishes by Long (John Cho). Here’s everything you need to know about the animated feature––with its plot, cast, and trailer!

What is Wish Dragon all about?

Judging by the name and the trailer, we’re in for an Aladdin-esque type of film. Fortunately, these plots aren’t really that tiring to watch. The movie revolves around the story of Din, a working-class college student (a peasant, says Long) who acquires the greatest chance to achieve his ambitions by discovering a teapot. Yes, a teapot that holds a dragon named Long.

Wish Dragon key art

Long has been trapped in the teapot for a thousand years and though he does seem all-powerful, it’s been said that there are actually limits to his wish-granting powers. Take, for example, falling in love. That’s a big no-no for Long.

Din and Long go on an adventure across Shanghai and find Lina, Din’s long-lost childhood best friend forever. However, those who plan on stealing the teapot spell trouble. If you aren’t familiar with this type of storytelling, then I’d suggest you revisit one of the most popular animated movies known to humankind: Aladdin. By all means, that’s no insult to Wish Dragon. In fact, knowing you’re facing against the classic movie takes a lot of guts––especially a talent like the late Robin Williams’ Genie.

Who are attached to Netflix’s Wish Dragon

Apart from Jimmy Wong and John Cho, finishing off the voice cast are Constance Wu, Jimmy O. Yang (Fantasy Island), Will Yun Lee (Altered Carbon), Bobby Lee (Magnum P.I.), Aaron Yoo (God Friended Me), and Ronnie Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians).

As the development of Wish Dragon leaped forward, multiple companies participated in creating the animated feature one of the best there is to look forward to in 2021. These companies include Sony Pictures Animation, Tencent, and Sparkle Roll. Alongside these, people like Aron Warner, Chris Bremble, and even the legendary Jackie Chan took part in producing. For Chan, however, he voices Long in the Mandarin-dubbed version of the film. That’s enough reason to watch it in the movie’s home dialect, honestly.

When is the release date of Wish Dragon on Netflix?

Wish Dragon is flying straight to your screen on the 11th of June, 2021!

Is there a trailer for Wish Dragon?

Of course, there is! Make sure your eyes are ready for some epic animations. Like most trailers, you’ll get a feel for the story and how it all glues in the end. What makes it stand out, however, is its inherent root in culture. Bad traffic, depiction of the working class, and just the overall environment. Enough dilly-dallying! Enjoy the trailer down below!
