To keep things short, Black Summer is returning to Netflix for a second season in 2021. Just like any series that met the circumstances of the forsaken pandemic, throughout most of 2020, the series hasn’t been able to get on its feet with production. However, come September of 2020, work for the series has proudly gone underway. Here’s everything you need to know about the second season of the streaming giant’s zombie epic!
What is Black Summer about?
Black Summer is a Netflix Original zombie series. Yes, you heard that right. After Netflix’s stint with Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead comes another zombie-thriller. Created by Karl Shaefer and John Hyams, Black Summer is set in the same universe as Syfy’s Z-Nation. The series was created to serve as a prequel to the zombie series. However, it does seem as though that Black Summer serves as more of a spiritual successor after Z-Nation didn’t really attract that much attention. The series takes on a more subtle approach––boasting an intimate, darker feel as opposed to the aggressive character of the other series.
The series is set years before the happenings of Z-Nation––when the dark days were even darker during the zombie apocalypse. The story revolves around a mother who joins a group of strangers in an effort to find her lost daughter and everyone else. Black Summer does prove to have some connections with Z-Nation, it’s just really set at a different timeline from the discontinued Syfy series.
When was Black Summer renewed?
You know Netflix and their antics when they renew certain series. Normally, the streaming platform gives it about two or even more months before they release any information about renewals on its social media accounts. Black Summer, on the other hand, received good news in October 2019. In that month, every fan of the zombie-thriller and their grandmas were excited to see news about a spotted auction on eBay alongside a website called HollywoodCharityAuctions.com––offering fans the opportunity to go on the set. During so, it was also mentioned that the second season was going to be filming in the Winter of 2019.
True enough, Netflix’s @NXOnNetflix Twitter account confirmed that Black Summer would be returning for a second season on the streaming giant.

Jaime King even joined in on the fun––taking part in the Twitter bonanza to express how happy she is regarding the renewal for a second season. Kylie Newman also announced that Jaime will be producing for season two. In a tweet of her own, Jaime King said: “So excited to announce Black Summer season to you proud to star and produce this series with the most incredible human beings and artists!”

What should we expect from season 2 of Black Summer?
Well, there’s a lot to expect from a big series––especially from a genre that’s been so present in the business. However, leave it to the heavily-hinted huge wave of zombies coming for the gang during the second season. Considering how the gang deals with zombies, it looks like season two will be as gory as ever. What makes Black Summer realistic is that it roots itself in the idea of humanity where anxiety, panic, and starvation are true to their nature––it happens all the time, especially in the world of the apocalypse.
As for the musically-inclined (which I am adoring during the first season), Alec Puro, the show’s composer, had something to share about the second season’s score:
“Season 2 of Black Summer has a whole new set of themes that reflect the new surroundings and characters within the show. I am also building upon previous themes from season 1 but the sound of the show has definitely evolved and is even more refined and targeted in this new season.”
When will season 2 of Black Summer be on Netflix?
Sadly, there’s still no official release date. However, there have been rumors circulating about a plan that sets the second season to release around the Summer of 2021.
