Did you know? Chandler And Monica Shouldn’t Have Been Together In “Friends”

Although many may find it hard to believe, the iconic couple of Monica and Chandler in ‘Friends’ almost didn’t come to exist as we know them.

Although many may find it hard to believe, the iconic couple of Monica and Chandler in ‘Friends’ almost didn’t come to exist, as we know them. But something happened that made their destiny ultimately come together permanently.

‘Friends’ was on the air for a total of ten years. Since its debut in 1994, the series evolved much like real life, with its plots changing based on audience reactions and the chemistry that developed as scenes were filmed. Many times, scripts were rewritten on the fly, with the actors contributing to some of the best lines that are still remembered today.

One of the most significant storylines in the fiction began in the final episode of the fourth season of the series. When the group of friends (everyone except Phoebe, who couldn’t travel from New York due to her pregnancy) travels to London to attend Ross’s second wedding.

Just before the episode ended, we discovered that Monica and Chandler had spent the night together. What would the future hold for them? Would it be a stable relationship, or was it just a one-night romance?

With those questions, the broadcast of the series’ episodes concluded, leaving millions of viewers on the edge of their seats until the new episodes would air on the small screen.

As revealed by the creators of the series, initially, this encounter was intended to be a “one-night stand.” However, the audience’s reaction during the recording was so positive that it prompted the writers to consider other alternatives. The audience applauded the unforgettable scene where Monica emerges from under Chandler’s sheets for a continuous 27 seconds.

Thanks to this, the couple began their secret journey, and some of the best moments of the series were obtained. Who could forget the legendary “they don’t know that we know they know we know” or Phoebe’s iconic reaction when she sees her friends getting together from across the street (“My eyes!! My eyes!!”).

On the other hand, speaking in the past with Vulture, one of the executive producers, Scott Silver, shared that the sexual tension between Chandler and Monica became evident to them starting from the second season. However, the romance between Ross and Rachel was occupying a crucial part of the plot, and they didn’t want to intertwine the two.

In fact, in the final episode of the third season of the series, ‘The One at the Beach,’ there were already hints that a future romance between the characters played by Perry and Cox could be possible…

Did you know that in the original plans of the creators, Chandler WAS NOT going to be the protagonist of ‘Friends’? However, when Matthew Perry came into the scene, everything changed. Last year, the actor published a memoir in which he shared his tough battle against addiction: ‘Friends, Lovers, and That Terrible Thing.’
