'Shadow and Bone': Final Release Date, Newest Trailer, Plot, and Cast

And here it is, the final leg to the Shadow and Bone news bonanza. After a couple of articles with no trailer or release date, we’ve finally completed what it means to become a Netflix release. All things aside, here’s everything you need to know about Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse book series!

What is Shadow and Bone all about?

Shadow and Bone is a live-action series based on Leigh Bardugo’s fantasy-adventure series that was commissioned by Netflix in January 2019 and has had Arrival and Bird Box‘s very own Eric Heisserer serve as the showrunner. On the directors’ side, the first season boasted of Primetime Emmy nominee Jeremy Webb, the TV legend responsible for series like Doctor Who, The Umbrella Academy, and Altered Carbon.

David J. Peterson was also tapped to create the fictional languages of Shadow and Bone as he is notoriously known as the curator of Game of Thrones languages.

In a recent interview, Bardugo said this about the show:

“Shadow and Bone takes place in a very different kind of fantasy world. Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords. It’s a story about the people who have been told how much they don’t matter proving how much they do. And it’s been incredible to see that story take shape on such an epic scale, the battles, the magic, but also the relationships between the characters.”

Shadow and Bone has adapted two series in Bardugo’s Grishaverse: its novel of the same name and Six of Crows. The story, then, is set in a world that is split into two by the monster-filled, flesh-eating darkness. The series follows the story of a young soldier by the name of Alina Starkov who resides in the Kingdom of Ravka. In a fascinatingly disturbing sequence of events, she unexpectedly discovers a power that might just be able to save her best friend––but most importantly, save the country. As she eventually starts to hone its powers, forces unite against her with General Kirigan the only person willing to help the cause.

According to Bardugo, although the streamer’s adaptation proves loyal to its source material, the series will differ from the books, saying:

“The show will be radically different from the books. But in the most amazing way. Will be pretty much a high budget fan fiction.”

In December, showrunner Eric Heisserer further explained this in details:

“The books are all set chronologically, so we technically don’t get to events in the Six of Crows books until after the Shadow and Bone books have ended. So what Leigh [Bardugo] and I had to do was essentially invent prequel stories for the key Six of Crows characters this season — Kaz, Inej, and Jesper — to fit alongside what is happening in the Shadow and Bone storyline. That’s been the heavy lifting.”

In another recent interview, Bardugo stated her comments about how the process was to create this type of series:

“We’ve taken the stories of Shadow and Bone and the characters of Six of Crows and we’ve brought them together in what I think will be a really unexpected way. Eric and our writers’ room and our directors have built something entirely new that still somehow stays true to the characters and to the heart of the stories.”

As confirmed last month, the first season of the Grishaverse series, Shadow and Bone, will be coming to the streaming giant on the 23rd of April, 2021, per Netflix’s official @NXOnNetflix Twitter account.
