‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Live-Action Adaptation: Release Date, Plot, Cast, and More

Despite the controversy surrounding it, Netflix’s live-action adaptation TV series of Avatar: The Last Airbender is still given the green light. Ever since the two original creators left the project in August of 2020, the series received a handful of criticism and skepticism. However, it doesn’t look like they’re stopping anytime soon. Here are all the basics that you need to know about the upcoming live-action adaptation!

What is Avatar: The Last Airbender all about?

Because of the inherent talent of Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the animated series became one of the most popular cartoons in the 2000s. With such a big fanbase, they decided to generate a spin-off series in 2012 titled The Legend of Korra. I doubt it, but if you’re not familiar with both of the series, you can enjoy them on the streaming giant.

Paying homage to the animation, the plot of the live-action remake will serve the same purpose.

Living in the world of the Avatar, civilization is divided into four separate nations inspired by the four main elements––the Air Nomads, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Water Tribes. For each nation, there are only but a few people who can manipulate these elements, and they’re known as “Benders” who practice their native martial arts and elemental control. However, to keep things at peace, the world celebrates an Avatar––the only user capable of mastering all four elements.

To choose the Avatar, a cycle must be followed by all four nations––and it just so happens that it was the time for the Air Nomads to contribute to the Avatar cycle. However, Aang abandoned his duty and slept in ice under the “Avatar State.” Eventually, he was awoken by Katara and Sokka of the Water Tribe and learned about the ongoing world war against the Fire Nation. With the help of his conveniently-different elemental benders, Aang is under a timer to learn all the remaining elements and bring peace amongst all nations.

When is the release date for Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Considering that the live-action is still far off from the starting line, we could say that the release date isn’t as near as we’d hope it’d be. While the series is still in pre-production, expect that the series won’t be releasing anytime soon––especially in 2020.

If anything, 2022 seems like an optimistic year for the live-action to release. If the pandemic still serves as an obstacle by then, then we’ll have to move it further back.
