‘The Silent Sea’: Netflix’s Upcoming Sci-Fi K-Drama, Release Date, Plot, Cast and More

Yes, sir! Nothing like a good ol’ K-Drama! This time, we won’t be diving into that romance fancy schmancy. We’re going out to space, my friends! We’re set to see another one of South Korea’s exciting projects as Netflix is slated to launch The Silent Sea. As you may have known, 2021 has been a big year for K-Dramas––not just for the genre itself, but for Netflix’s list of releases as well. With such a powerful cast and a literally out-of-this-world story, The Silent Sea might just bring home the bacon here.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming K-Drama, from the plot, cast, trailer, and even the release date!

What is The Silent Sea all about?

The Silent Sea is an upcoming Netflix Original sci-fi K-Drama series directed by Choi Hang-yang. Alongside Choi is screenwriter Park Eun-Kyo. This partnership dates way back to 2014 where Park assisted Choi in adapting The Sea of Tranquility short film into a TV series.

The Silent Sea is set in the future when Earth is dying and is left for desertification. However, the very glimmer of hope Earth rests in the palms of the members of a specialist team sent to the Moon. Their mission: to retrieve a mysterious sample from the Balhae Base research station.

As it stands, the newest Netflix K-Drama sci-fi series is a part of the $500 million investment of the streaming giant for content hailing from South Korea.

When is The Silent Sea‘s release date on Netflix?

You know how Netflix works by now. However, though the streaming giant hasn’t confirmed when The Silent Sea will be premiering, there’s the knowledge that the K-Drama sci-fi will be dropping sometime around 2021. Well, at least it’s not next year, for all it’s worth.

Who are the cast members of The Silent Sea?

These are the following cast members you’ll be seeing in The Silent Sea.

  • Gong Yoo as Han Yoon Jae
  • Bae Doo Na as Song Ji An
  • Lee Joon as Rye Tae Seok
  • Heo Sung Tae as Kim Jae Sun
  • Lee Moo Saeng as Gong Soo Hyuk
  • Jung Soon Won as Soo Chan
  • Heo Jung Do’s role is TBA
  • Lee Joon Hyuk’s role is TBA
  • Kim Sun-Young’s role is TBA

Seen any familiar names? Of course, you have! One, in particular, has been seen in a handful of Netflix Original series––Bae Doo Na, an extremely familiar face for K-Drama lovers out there. The Silent Sea is her fifth Netflix Original series with the streaming giant.

The list doesn’t end there, however, as one of South Korea’s biggest stars is also on-board for The Silent Sea. Have you seen Goblin and Train to Busan? Well, you have your work cut out as Gong Yoo will be returning to acting for a TV series after taking a break for five years.

As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the heavy-hitting casts for a K-Drama––making it one of the most exciting and hyped series of the genre on Netflix so far.

When did filming begin for The Silent Sea?

As per Han Cinema, filming began last year, August of 2020. However, news of its ending hasn’t really surfaced on the web, but there are expectations that the series is inches away from finishing now. Either way, post-production will serve to be a heavy task considering it’s a series set in space.

What is the episode count?

As for how many episodes it’ll feature, it has already been confirmed that The Silent Sea will be boasting 8 episodes. Runtime, however, hasn’t been confirmed just yet––but normal K-Dramas do last about 30 to 45 minutes so expect a long binge for those eight episodes.
