The new trailer for the upcoming season, which debuted today with Star Trek: Prodigy at Star Trek’s animation-focused San Diego Comic-Con At Home 2021 session, sets the tone for what’s to come in the aftermath of last season’s final status quo shift.
Lower Decks‘ first season was a lot of fun for families who can handle a network-level of adult humor — this isn’t Rick and Morty. While Star Trek: Prodigy will debut in the fall as the more “kid-friendly” of the two animated Trek shows, Lower Decks’ first season was a lot of fun for families who can handle a network-level of adult humor. Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) will resume his duties on the “USS Titan,” captained by William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), while his old comrades — Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Tendi (Nol Wells) — toil away on the far less glamorous “USS Cerritos.”
Boimler was scouted by Riker for a promotion, which would imply a move onboard the Titan, after Captain Riker and the USS Titan came to save the Cerritos from a violent encounter with the Pakleds at the end of season one. The ensign-turned-lieutenant chose not to notify anyone, leaving his comrades behind for good—much to the chagrin of Mariner, who had spent the entire incident realizing how much she treasured being onboard the Cerritos and among her friends.
The official trailer for Paramount+’s adult animation series Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 aired during the virtual Star Trek Universe panel at ComicCon@Home. The new season will release on the streaming service on August 12th.
