Army of the Dead: The Netflix Zombie Film’s Release Date, Cast, and the new Poster

Look, I know we’re all in on the Zack Snyder-Justice League hype train––and it’s perfectly understandable. However, there’s a lot more to Snyder than meets the eye, and his cut for Justice League isn’t the only movie the talented director has to offer in the next months. Understandably, all eyes are on the awaited “The Snyder Cut” for Justice League on HBO Max on the 18th of March. While all that’s happening, Netflix has announced that Army of the Dead, Snyder’s newest zombie movie, will soon be released after the awaited cut. Here’s everything you need to know about the zombie film!

What is Army of the Dead about?

Based on an original story by Snyder, Army of the Dead is your full-on zombie apocalypse film––just with a little twist of an electrifying heist. The story is about a group of mercenaries who risk their lives in the middle of an apocalypse in quarantined Las Vegas to achieve what is thought to be the most legendary heist to ever be attempted. A heist in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, you say? Yup, that sounds just about Snyder to me.

The streaming giant is already adamant about the Snyder film. If you didn’t know, Netflix will be releasing a prequel series focusing on Matthias Schweighöfer’s character alongside Fast & Furious star Nathalie Emmanuel. Schweighöfer wrote and directed all the episodes of the series and is described to be “multi-language.” The series will be premiering on the streaming giant later this year.

What does this mean for Snyder?

Army of the Dead marks the return of Snyder to the genre of zombies and the undead for the first time since Dawn of the Dead, his directorial debut that he and James Gunn collaborated on. After realizing his talent in the genre of special effects (yet still rooted in reality), Snyder went on to solidify projects such as 300 and Sucker Punch. Of course, how can we forget his projects with the DC Universe? Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were some of the projects that really molded what the DC Cinematic Universe really is today. However, as for Army of the Dead, Snyder finds himself working as his own cinematographer––adding quite a layer to the Netflix Original.

Snyder has had a wild ride recently. After getting the green light from Warner Bros. to add a new scene and other visual effects to Justice League following an early exit from the post-production of the film, Zack Snyder’s film career is about to get even bigger as he releases “The Snyder Cut” and Army of the Dead–– two of the most awaited films––this year. This should be more than enough to prove Snyder’s worth in the business as one of the most prolific filmmakers.

Who is attached to Army of the Dead?

Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Joby Harold are also set to write for the project while the cast involves the likes of Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Garret Dillahunt. Rounding out the cast are Raúl Castillo, Huma Quereshi, Samantha Win, Richard Cetrone, and Michael Cassidy.

Chris D’Elia was supposed to be a part of the Netflix Original, it’s just that his allegations of sexual misconduct had him removed from the film––eventually being replaced by Star Trek: Discovery actress and comedian, Tig Notaro, and put through some vigorous reshoots for the film.

When is the release date of Army of the Dead?

Well, there it is, people. In two months, we’ll get served two Zack Snyder films––a treat we never thought we deserved. Here’s the teaser poster for Army of the Dead as it releases on the 21st of May, 2021.
