‘Atypical’ Season 4: Renewal, Release Date, Plot, and Cast

Let’s keep this short and sweet, shall we? Atypical is returning for a fourth and final season on Netflix in 2021 and here’s everything you need to know about the last season––from the release date to everything else in between!

What is Atypical all about?

Created by Robia Rashid, Atypical revolves around the story of Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), an autistic teenager who must get past the hardships of growing up. The Netflix Original series also zooms in on Sam’s family members like his mother Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), his father Doug (Michael Rapaport), and his sister Casey (Brigette Lundy-Paine).

For a pretty feel-good series, it makes you think about life more than you should––but maybe that’s one of the reasons why the series has been loved by the fans for the past couple of years.

The series already has three seasons under its belt with the most recent being season 3 that released in November of 2019.

Has Atypical been renewed for season 4?

It’s impossible to not have heard of the renewal of Atypical for the sole reason that it was renewed over a year ago. In February 2020, numerous social media outlets have announced the show’s renewal for its final season. With the renewal, of course, comes a short clip of what really evidently seems to be the final season. The caption says:

They’ve brought you laughs, tears, hugs and homies. Now see how the story concludes. Atypical. The Final Season.

And just like that, millions of fans are heartbroken. Homies, indeed it was.

Robia Rashid, showrunner of the show, said this in a statement for The Hollywood Reporter:

I am excited that we are going to do a season 4 of ‘Atypical’. Although I am sad because the end of the series is approaching, I am tremendously grateful to have been able to tell this story. Our fans are great and great defenders of the series. Thank you for being so open to the voice and stories of Sam, and the entire Gardner family. I hope that the legacy of ‘Atypical’ is that there are more voices that cease to be without listening and that even when the series ends, we will continue to tell emotional and funny stories from poorly represented points of view.

Rashid isn’t the only member of the family who had mixed reactions about the final season. Keir Gilchrist, for example, said that he’s “excited to bring this story to a close with you all” on Instagram.

Lundy-Paine, on the other hand, posted photos and videos of her and the whole Atypical family working, saying:

We Are Doing 1 More Season of Atypical !!!!!!! this show has brought me warmth, community and purpose and I hope it has done the same for you. We love you atypies, cazzie nation, Zam Fam, Penguinos, Delsa stans (and Nelsa stans), Paigers and Juliams.

When will Atypical season 4 be on Netflix?

This is the real question, isn’t it? Unfortunately, only a very vague 2021 release date has been given as of the moment. However, take comfort in the fact that the show was renewed just before the pandemic and they would’ve been miles ahead of production if it weren’t for the fact. With the filming schedule very likely to have been done towards the end of 2020 or early 2021, we’ll most likely see season 4 of Atypical premiere on the streaming giant around the first half of 2021. If anything, brace yourself for a release between March 2021 to June 2021 since both January and February are out of the picture already.

While there really isn’t much content for Atypical, here’s something to enjoy and binge-watch while you wait––a blooper reel and behind-the-scenes footage for the third season of the show.
