From the creators of one of the most dominant and top-rated MOBA comes a new animated series, Arcane. Arcane is an animated television series set in the League of Legends universe. The series was unveiled during the League of Legends 10th Anniversary celebrations. The first season was expected to release in 2020, however, it was delayed until 2021 in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Arcane’s Updates and Plot
As stated by Ghostcrawler (from Riot Creative Development and IP):
“Creative development and production is hard, especially in a world where you can’t see your coworkers IRL. We have video meetings now, which help, but they are no substitute for being in a room where we can really get the creative energy flowing.”
On May 3, 2021 it was announced to premiere exclusively on Netflix in the fall of 2021.
Netflix finally dropped Arcane’s first official trailer at 1:48 AM of September 26, 2021 and immediately gained 300 thousand views within the first few hours. Arcane is the first-ever series adaptation of the world-renowned League of Legends video game; it was also officially announced to premiere on the 6th of November at 4:00 pm EST/7:00 PST.
Set in Piltover and Zaun; known across Runeterra as the “city of progress” for their innovations, Piltover and Zaun are not as marvelous as it sounds. Being split between the rich utopian region of Piltover and the oppressed underground seedy underbelly of Zaun, the city is in a delicate balance. But the creation of hextech (a way for any person to control magical energy) threatens that balance.
The story will follow the origin of two iconic League champions Vi and Jinx, and the power that will tear them apart. Arcane has a total of nine episodes that will be split into three acts with three episodes each. Arcane’s first act will focus on the sisters Vi and Jinx trying to survive in Piltover and Zaun. Arcane’s second act will debut on November 13 and the season’s final act will hit Netflix on November 20.
Castings and Production
The television series is said to star Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye, Dickinson) as Vi, Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets, Army of the Dead) as Jinx, Kevin Alejandro (Lucifer, The Returned) as Jayce, Katie Leung (Annika, Roadkill) as Caitlyn, Jason Spisak (DC Super Hero Girls, Young Justice) as Silco, Toks Olagundoye (Big Shot, The Rookie) as Mel, JB Blanc (Dota: Dragon’s Blood, The Owl House) as Vander and Harry Lloyd (Brave New World, Legion) as Viktor.
It will be developed and produced by Riot Games, with animation services by Fortiche Productions. Riot also stated that like the game on which it is based, Arcane is aimed at a “14+” audience and will deal with some more adult subject matter. Arcane marks Riot’s first-ever venture into the world of television.
