Netflix’s Apocalyptic Thriller Everyone Will Be Buzzing About: An End-of-the-World Film from the Creator of ‘Mr. Robot’

Netflix has maintained a consistent trend of releasing end-of-the-world movies for two consecutive years, and 2023 is no exception.

In 2021, Netflix added “Don’t Look Up” to its roster. 2022 saw the release of “Background Noise.” This year, it’s “Leave the World Behind.” The movie is poised to be a major topic of discussion, much like Adam McKay’s film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Sam Esmail, the creator of “Mr. Robot”—a show that catapulted Rami Malek to widespread fame—is at the helm of “Leave the World Behind.” This apocalyptic thriller boasts an all-star cast, including Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Kevin Bacon.

Significant figures are also involved behind the scenes. Former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama serve as executive producers through their company, Higher Ground Productions. This marks their first venture into fictional films.

Based on the novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, “Leave the World Behind” follows a family who rents a vacation home on Long Island. Their peaceful retreat is disrupted when a man and a girl, claiming to be father and daughter, assert that it’s their home and seek refuge from an impending blackout. As the threat looms closer, both families are faced with a critical decision on how to confront the world’s impending collapse.

Netflix has released a new teaser for the film, which can be viewed above. “Leave the World Behind” will join Netflix’s streaming library on December 8th, making it a fitting title for the year’s final month.
