‘Britney vs. Spears’: A Shocking Documentary About the Popstar

Britney vs Spears, Netflix’s latest addition to the ever-growing collection of documentaries analyzing the pop star’s conservatorship, was published today, and it makes for compelling viewing in what is quickly becoming a saturated market. Journalist Jenny Eliscu and filmmaker Erin Lee Carr investigate Britney’s battle for liberation from the conservatorship she’s been under for the past 13 years in this 90-minute documentary.

About Britney vs Spears

The documentary, directed by Erin Lee Carr, is about the pop star’s current quest to break free from her father’s conservatorship, which regulates her life. However, there is no aspect of Spears’ narrative that is too difficult or personal to convey on the journey there.

The film rehashes Spears’ divorce from Kevin Federline and her period as a tabloid subject, along with unfavorable paparazzi video footage of Spears at a destabilized point in 2007. Voices from Spears’ past, such as former manager Sam Lutfi and paparazzo ex Adnan Ghalib, take precedence, while text messages from Spears, which Ghalib provided to the filmmakers, play onscreen. We hear a late-night phone call Spears placed in 2009 to a lawyer, appealing for aid in assuring she doesn’t lose custody of her children.

Britney’s own voice offers the heartbreaking end to Britney Vs. Spears: The Final Battle, which is fitting for someone who has been silenced for so long. Britney Spears’ harrowing June court testimony concludes the video, with a furious, eloquent Britney Spears seeking justice and urging the court to improve her position.

The project’s announcement comes during a hectic month for the global pop sensation. She just announced on Instagram that she is engaged to longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari, only to then announce that she will be taking a social media hiatus. It was only a temporary reprieve, as the 39-year-old was back on the job within a week. Meanwhile, her conservatorship case is set to return to court on Sept. 29 to determine the fate of the 13-year arrangement.

Spears has expressed a wish to have her father, Jamie Spears, removed from the conservatorship, and her newly appointed personal counsel, prominent litigator Mathew Rosengart, has moved quickly on her side. Jamie Spears, for one, filed a response to the petition last month in which he agreed to step aside through his attorney.

Britney vs Spears is now out on Netflix which premiered last September 28. What are your reactions to this news? Voice out your opinions in the comments!
