Squid Game Scoops Prize at Gotham Awards 2021 for Breakthrough Series

Squid Game, the South Korean drama series that has been topping Netflix’s watchlist for months since its release on September 17 has been awarded the title of Breakthrough Series at Gotham Award 2021.

Where did Gotham Awards Take Place?

The Gotham Awards 2021 took place in New York in Cipriani Wall Street on Monday night 29th November. Squid Game’s creators Hwang Dong-hyuk, JungHo-Yeon and Lee Jung-Jae attended the prestigious event.

The show took home the prize of Breakthrough Series over 40 Minutes. The team members who attended were ecstatic as they posed backstage, showing off their trophies.

Heartfelt Words

“It took 12 years to create this show and less than 12 days to become the #1 show in the world,” Hwang Dong-hyuk noted. The show’s creator described his weary journey that began in 2009 when he wrote the script, but everyone rejected it. “It’s unrealistic, it’s too violent, it’s absurd, it’s weird,” were some of the heart-breaking comments he got about his script.
Squid Game’s producer Kim Ji-Yeon also remarked that the show’s success was nothing short of a miracle, having received immense support from international viewers for a foreign-language TV series.

Other Winners of the Gotham Awards

Alongside Squid Game, the comedy-drama TV show Reservation Dogs created by Sterlin Harjo also took home a breakthrough series award. Harjo made a heartfelt speech as he accepted the prize concerning the need for Americans to acknowledge the presence of indigenous people and to remember the background of Wall Street, which reflects in the U.S. former president’s attempt to eject natives by building a wall.

Netflix’s 2021 psychological drama film, The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal dominated the occasion by scooping four awards including, the best feature title.
