The Boys Season 4: An Unexpected Return, Crossovers with Other Series, and New Superheroes

Season 3 of “The Boys” came to an end on Prime Video on July 8, 2022, with the episode titled ‘The Wild Red-White Moment’ (3×08), and many are eagerly awaiting the premiere of the fourth installment. Few Amazon Prime Video series have received such unanimous acclaim as this superheroic romp, and any step it might take in the future is of interest.

In this latest installment, we saw how Homelander (Antony Starr) embraced his more paternal side upon learning that Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) was his biological father. So much so that Butcher (Karl Urban) decided at the last moment to take down the Captain America parody rather than his loyal archenemy.

On the other hand, Maeve (Dominique McElligott) decides to sacrifice herself so that Soldier Boy’s power wouldn’t affect the others, even though it would also end Homelander, with whom she had been fighting in the Vought building. In the end, Soldier Boy ends up back in a fridge, Black Noir is dead, Homelander reunites with his son with whom he has bonded quite well, and Starlight (Erin Moriarty) joins the group of these antiheroes.

But what are the plans for season 4? Below, we provide everything we know about this eagerly anticipated installment that promises more violence, blood, guts, new superheroes, and crossovers.

WHEN DOES SEASON 4 OF ‘THE BOYS’ PREMIERE?

Unfortunately, there is no premiere date for season 4 of The Boys yet. However, it is expected to do so sometime in 2023, a year after the premiere of the third season, just as it happened with the first and second installments. For the last one, we had to wait two years due to the pandemic problems caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Another option is for it to premiere in 2024 since filming of the episodes did not start until August 2022, and traditionally, more than a year passes between the start of recording and its arrival on Amazon. If we do the math, season 4 of The Boys would not premiere until December 2023, so it could easily be postponed to the following year.

WHO’S RETURNING AND WHO’S NOT?

Season 3 ended with several cliffhangers regarding the future of several characters, such as Maeve. However, she survives the fall of the Vought building alongside Soldier Boy but without powers. And apparently, it won’t be a final farewell.

The confirmed death is that of Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell). However, its creator, Eric Kripke, has revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that it won’t be the last we see of this hero of the Seven:

“It’s definitely not the last we’ve seen of Black Noir as a hero. It’s just that the guy who was inside the Noir suit in season 3 is no longer there.” He also took the opportunity to explain that the actor who is under the superhero’s suit will return for season 4, playing a new, very interesting, and fun character that might be mimicking Black Noir in terms of the suit.

NEW SUPERHEROES

The Seven are definitely split up. This means that the vacancies left to make them seven again will need to be filled:

“I think it’s time to bring a couple of new superheroes to The Seven who will be much more in line with the madness of Homelander,” explains Eric Kripke. “He’s going to stack the deck with heroes much more dangerous than what we’ve seen so far.”

The creator hasn’t given many details about who these superheroes would be that would accompany The Deep (Chace Crawford) and Homelander on this new race against time against the protagonists, where Butcher is close to dying due to the Compound V he has been taking.

Susan Heyward, Valerie Curry, and the very Jeffrey Dean Morgan, whom we all remember as Negan from The Walking Dead, have been announced to join the cast. Two images of Heyward and Curry characterized as Sister Sage and Firecracker have also been released.

CROSSOVERS WITH OTHER SERIES

Amazon Prime Video is aware of the success they have on their hands, and that’s why they want to expand it with other projects. One of them is already available on the streaming platform, and it’s called The Boys: Diabolical, an animated anthology series where one of its stories tells the origins of Homelander.

Another one is Gen V, another spin-off that revolves around a group of teenagers who attend the only Godolskin university exclusively for teenage superheroes, and its second season is already in the works. We’ve already seen a crossover with several important characters from this series.

AND… MANY MORE GROTESQUE SCENES

The Boys wouldn’t be what it is if it didn’t unsettle the viewer a bit, and we can be sure that the episodes of season 4 will continue to do so. As Stephen Fleet, the special effects supervisor, posted on Twitter, there’s a scene that’s going to be much talked about. “My eyes can’t forget what they’ve just seen,” he wrote on the social network, whetting the appetite of the series’ fans.

Moreover, someone working as a visual effects supervisor has stated that they just saw one of the most disgusting things they have ever seen in their career. To which the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, quickly responded, honestly wondering which one they were referring to among the many they’ve surely already shot.

However, all the madness has to be driven with logic. The showrunner stated in an interview with SensaCine that if an episode required four weeks of preparation, three and a half were focused on the characters, and in the remaining time, they included the craziness. “The secret sauce of this series is that we never try to outdo ourselves,” Kripke assures.
