Western depictions of science-fiction have quickly put viewers on the edge of their seats. However, the eastern side of the world depicts the genre just as crazy––if not crazier. With that being said, Netflix has acquired the South Korean sci-fi blockbuster Space Sweepers (not to be confused with the game Minesweeper, yes?) that will be released without a theatrical run.
Three new Korean films are coming to Netflix! Let the K-content thrive.

“We are happy to announce that Netflix will open ‘Space Sweepers’ simultaneously in 190 countries,” Netflix said in a release. “As Korea-made dramas and movies have become the most beloved content in the world, we expect that ‘Space Sweepers‘ will also create a global buzz,” they continued.
Without an inch of doubt, Korean dramas do actually contest the western side. That doesn’t mean they couldn’t contest sci-fi as well, could they?
Though the acquisition was as elaborate as it seemed, the statement didn’t go into further details––particularly the film’s release date.

The film revolves around a group of space scavengers who are in the hunt for scraps in space so as to make money in the year 2092. Futuristic, isn’t it? As fictional of a universe it is, Earth is destroyed by pollution and the upper-class have transferred themselves to another habitable world in the depths of the universe.
With that story, it proves to be one of the most anticipated films in South Korea that stars Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri. However, knowing that the pandemic lives on, release schedules have been blurry, to say the least. That led the Space Sweepers to run on Netflix instead of theatres.
