Some of the best teen comedies manage to combine outrageous humor with genuine, heartbreaking romance, and Hulu’s upcoming film Sex Appeal will do just that. When her lover begins to indicate that he wants to take things to the next level, the coming-of-age story will center on a young woman determined to become a master of sex. Her investigation, of course, becomes a little more complicated than she anticipated, especially when her best buddy becomes involved.
“Avery Hansen-White doesn’t do things she isn’t excellent at. So when her long-distance boyfriend hints at wanting to take their relationship to the next level, she sets out to master her sexuality, employing her oldest friend, Larson, as a test subject. In this hilarious teen comedy, Avery’s study results in the realization that there’s more to sex, and love, than mechanics. Relationships require both head and heart.” The official synopsis reads.
Avery, an adolescent seeking sexual education, is played by Mika Abdalla, and Margaret Cho appears to be a very sympathetic and accepting character. Paris Jackson, who previously played in Ryan Murphy’s anthology series American Horror Stories, will join Abdalla and Cho in the cast. Jake Short, Mason Versaw, Fortune Feimster, Rebecca Henderson, Tate Hanyok, Hayden Szeto, and Artemis Pebdani also star in Sex Appeal.
Jeremy Garelick, Will Phelps, and Ryan Bennett produce Sex Appeal for American High. Nickel City’s Mark Fasano and Tobias Weymar are also producing. In addition, Lit Entertainment’s Kendrick Tan and LD Entertainment’s Michael Glassman will produce.
The film was directed by Talia Osteen and written by Tate Hanyock, who also served as executive producer. Following films like The Binge and Plan B, Sex Appeal is the production company’s fifth Hulu Original feature.
Sex Appeal will air on Hulu on January 14, 2022.
