Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will be Coming to Netflix in 2022

A stop-motion animation of the classic tale of Pinocchio will be coming to Netflix next year. We know Guillermo del Toro from dark but beautiful movies like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, but this will be the first animated film he has ever directed. We have every faith in him, although we imagine it will be a little darker than the Pinocchio we are used to. His re-imagining of Pinocchio will debut on Netflix in late 2022. Everyone knows the story of the boy who was made from wood by a poor woodcutter, Geppetto, who just wanted a child so he lovingly carved one from a special piece of timber. He wanted the boy, Pinocchio, to go to school and be a good boy, but as all parents know, it’s not as easy as just wanting it!

The Adventures of Pinocchio is a classic Italian story written by Carlo Collodi and published in 1883. Pinocchio is the pride and joy of his father but because he is so mischievous and impudent, his nose grows every time he misbehaves. He has to learn how to be a good boy – like all of us really – and he has many adventures while he is doing just that. Along his journey he gets into so much trouble, from which he learns a lot of lessons and makes some friends, most notably with Jiminy Cricket, a cricket who helps to guide him along a good path. Eventually, as we all know so we don’t really need a spoiler alert here, he does become a real boy due to the magic of the blue fairy, but by the end of the story he definitely deserves it.

The movie has a star-studded cast in place already. David Bradley will voice Geppetto, Gregory Mann will voice Pinocchio, Ewan McGregor will voice Jiminy Cricket, and also featuring in the movie arre the voices of Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, and Ron Perlman.
