The Fall of the House of Usher: Mike Flanagan’s New Series Gets the Green Light from Netflix

Mike Flanagan, the creator of Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass is working on another upcoming eight-episode Netflix series which is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher.

The Fall of the House of Usher is one of Poe’s short stories, a gothic tale with all of the elements that make a tale gothic – a haunted house in a dreary and dull landscape, pale characters with mysterious illnesses, vague background happenings that you can’t quite understand yet. The plot of the story, however, contrasts perfectly with the setting, being full of unexpected turns and disruptions.

The house of Usher in the story is both the physical building – the house of usher – and the usher family line, which has no outside branches, which means that any genetic transmission has been a result of incest in the house. Told by an unnamed narrator visiting his boyhood friend, Roderick Usher, the story describes through the narrator how the house looks diseased, with a crack from the roof to the ground and decaying trees and murky ponds around the grounds.

The upcoming series, in development now, is expected to be just as unsettling as the rest considering what the creators did with Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House, and the Henry James novella The Turn of the Screw, taking the psychologically terrifying themes of these stories and using how they play on your fear, without telling you what you’re supposed to be afraid of. We will see a lot of familiar faces in the new series too, with a host of names that we recognize from Flanagan’s past creations. Returning to the screen are Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel, Zach Gilford, Annabeth Gish, Rahul Kohli, Robert Longstreet, T’Nia Miller, Katie Parker, Igby Rigney, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, and Michael Trucco. Joining this returning cast will be Mark Hamill, Carla Gugino, Frank Langella, Mary McDonnel, and Carl Lumbly.
