American Boogeywoman: Coming to Netflix on January 21st

Aileen Carol Wuornos is fascinating to us mostly because she is a female serial killer, which is a rare thing indeed. Most serial killers are male, and a huge amount of their victims are female sex workers. Aileen Wuornos flipped the script on this all too familiar story. She was a sex worker who murdered men.

Some of us have learned the story of Aileen Wuornos, the infamous female serial killer, in documentaries like Aileen Wuornos: Selling of a Serial Killer, and Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, and in movies such as Monster, starring Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci. These productions tell us about the later parts of her life, her time in prison, her sentencing and trials, and the murders she committed in 1989 and 1990.

Written and directed by Daniel Farrands, the man behind the film Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman, Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman is a 2021 American biographical film, set years earlier in 1976, and based on Aileen Wuornos’s early life. She came to Florida in 1976 after an abusive childhood, looking for a new start. She married a wealthy older man, who was part of high society there, and went on to wreak havoc in his family.

Cobra Kai’s Peyton List stars as a young Aileen Wuornos, alongside Tobin Bell who plays her husband Lewis, and Lydia Hearst as his daughter. Ashley Atwood plays an older Aileen Wuornos in the movie also.

This look at the little-known past of the notorious serial killer’s life will be arriving on Netflix on January 21st in the US.
