Is Steve Rogers Dead In The MCU?

The last we see of the former Star-Spangled Avenger was at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers, after choosing to follow Tony’s advice to live a normal and peaceful life, passes on the shield to Sam Wilson.

Never to be seen again…?

Fast forward a couple of years and were now in the thick of the MCU’s Phase 4. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness having taken over theaters, Ms. Marvel currently releasing episodes in Disney+ and trailers for Thor: Love and Thunder popping out one after the other. And yet we still haven’t seen any sign of Cap showing up.

Strictly speaking, no one actually knows whether or not Steve Rogers passed away off-screen. The only ones even implied to know are Sam and Bucky themselves and they never disclose his status on screen. But you know how it is with superhero movies and comic book stories in general: until we see a body or a direct statement that Steve Rogers is D E A D, we assume he’ll at least make an appearance sometime.

The fans, of course, have constructed tons of theories on what happened to Steve. Some of them do think that he’s already dead. But those that believe Steve Rogers is still alive find themselves in no shortage of clues and materials from the comics to formulate ideas on where he might be or what he might be doing.

Here are a couple of the top theories that the internet has spawned regarding Steve Roger’s whereabouts.

Steve could have simply returned to the timeline where he lived with Peggy

Steve and Peggy’s happy ending

This one seems the most likely option. After passing on the mantle (shield), he goes back to the timeline where he lived happily ever after with Peggy Carter. Although Peggy would already be dead in his timeline as well, Steve would likely still have close relationships he cared for in that timeline. Maybe he even had kids with Peggy and has a whole family of little super soldiers to look after now.

On The Moon

Nick Fury in Space

This one’s a little obscure and might seem out of the blue to those who haven’t watched The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney+ yet (It’s a good show, I recommend it!).

The show gives a more in-depth view of how the world is coping with the loss of The First Avenger. Like us, none of them knew exactly what became of Steve Rogers. They casually mention the rumor that Steve might be hiding on the moon.

Now, where and how that rumor started is anyone’s best guess. But that could definitely be Marvel hinting at where he’s actually at. Of course, equally as likely is that it’s just Marvel throwing out a red herring, something they’ve done multiple times now.

Let me add my own personal spin to it. I think that Steve could secretly be the new director/co-director of S.H.I.E.L.D. We’ve seen and heard of Nick Fury being in space since Spider-Man: Far From Home. It wouldn’t be that far of a stretch to have him be a some base in the moon. It’s happened in the comics. And Nick Fury passing or sharing leadership of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Steve Rogers is definitely a possibility. I’m sure I’m not the first person to think of this possibility though. What do you think happened to Cap?
